“Welcome to the Tamarack family! After 10 years I still feel like: ‘Ah, I’m home’, when I walk through the doors!”

– Tamarack May 2010 Graduate

We want you to feel that way too. That’s why we do everything we can to create a safe, warm, friendly, family-like atmosphere in our beautiful character property located in the heart of Winnipeg.

Our Centre at a Glance

Your first impression of TRC will likely be from our front walk where you will see bright flower beds and wooden steps leading to the painted front door. Our Centre looks just like many of the homes you’ll see in the vibrant, family oriented neighbourhood where we are located. That’s intentional – we want you to experience recovery in a place and atmosphere that is as close to the reality of life after treatment as possible so you feel prepared and confident to face a life without addiction when you graduate.

Inside, the Tamarack House is laid out like many family homes. Downstairs, we have a dining room where participants share healthy and comforting meals that have been prepared in our bright, well-equipped kitchen. Two living rooms provide comfortable spaces for participants to relax. Spacious bedrooms on the upper floors provide a restful retreat for alone-time when needed.

Our counsellors’ offices are located on the upper and lower floors. These light and welcoming spaces give participants privacy in individual sessions with their counsellor.

Your Safety and Comfort

We understand that contemplating recovery in a live-in group setting can be daunting. You will no doubt have many questions and some concerns about how you will settle in to this new environment.
Be reassured that we are absolutely focused on making you feel welcome, comfortable and safe here from the day you arrive until graduation and beyond. We do this by:

  • Supporting you in completing all required intake and participant paperwork and any forms that may need to be filled in to access additional services. We want you to feel free to ask any questions and get the answers you need;
  • Having clear rules and strict safety protocols in place that balance individual needs with the need to keep everyone safe;
  • Implementing healthy living routines based on our many years’ experience of what makes for a successful recovery. These include participant involvement in daily household tasks and meal preparation; set meal and lights out times; plus providing support for stopping smoking and accessing low or no cost fitness activities;
  • Helping you find and access addictions self-help groups that meet your needs;
  • Having an open-door policy where all staff are happy to assist with whatever you may need or find you someone who can. Many of our staff have direct, first-hand experience of the challenges and joys of recovery and you will find them supportive and constructive when seeking help;
  • Valuing and respecting each other’s cultural and spiritual experiences and outlooks and creating a safe space for you to express and explore these. We place a high value on the benefits of a spiritual practice in recovery and are happy to help create space for you to engage with your beliefs and traditions here;
  • Restricting cell phone and electronic device use to protect participants’ identities and ensure your mind is free to focus on you and the work you will be doing in recovery;
  • Providing a smoke-free interior environment. If you are a smoker/use vaping devices there are designated areas outside the house where you may use these;

  • Accommodating dietary requirements and allergies. Note that we are also a scent-free environment;
  • Having established and essential, safety features such as fire escapes, fire and intruder alarms, and security cameras monitored by our front office staff; and
  • Inviting and encouraging participant feedback on the house and day to day issues in our weekly house meeting.

Dining room

Our wood-paneled dining room featuring antique cabinetry and vibrant art work, is a warm space for participants to get to know and support each other at mealtimes. Our years’ of experience in providing recovery services have shown us that sharing meals together is a powerful way for participants to make healthy connections.

The dining room is also where you’ll find the coffee pot that is always on and snacks to keep you going throughout the day.

Kitchen

The Tamarack kitchen is a bright space with clean white cabinetry and up to date appliances. It plays an important role in our programming as participants use this well-equipped space to prepare suppers as part of the weekly household tasks rotation.

The sharing of cooking responsibilities supports the healthy, family-like atmosphere of the house and builds skills for life after graduation from the program. Don’t worry, we support all of our ‘chefs for the day’ by providing quality ingredients and easy to follow recipes so you can feel comfortable developing or rediscovering your cooking skills.

Bedrooms

Our centre has six bedrooms. Each room is air-conditioned and equipped for two same-gender participants with two each of the following: dresser, closet, bedside table, reading light, and alarm clock.

Participants have ample storage space for their clothes and other personal belongings. All bedding and towels are provided and laundry facilities are available in-house.

We also have one private room for participants for whom a private space would be more suitable for their needs.

Bathrooms

We have four bathrooms, two of which are exclusively for participant use throughout their stay.

These facilities are shared with strict protocols in place to ensure privacy and high standards of cleanliness.
